PURPOSE:
The Governor's Highway Safety Program has awarded the City the FY 2020-2021 Federal Traffic Safety Grant Funds on behalf of the Greensboro Department of Transportation. A budget ordinance needs to be approved to permit the expenditure of funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Department of Transportation has been awarded funding from the Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) to support implementation of the Vision Zero Greensboro Action Plan. Approved by City Council in May 2019, the Action Plan provides an interdepartmental framework of action intended to significantly reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries over time with a long-term goal of zero.
This grant will provide funding support for a new, limited-term engineer position dedicated to implementation of the Vision Zero Greensboro Action Plan. Work areas include management and analysis of crash data; identification of needed safety countermeasures including infrastructure, education, and enforcement needs; system level analysis of the high injury network and tracking of safety performance measures; identification of needed changes to City policies including design standards and guidelines; and promoting transportation safety for all modes.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The limited-term engineer position supporting the implementation of the Vision Zero Greensboro Action Plan will be funded as follows:
$84,835 - Federal Grant (85%)
$14,971 - Local Funds (15%)
