PURPOSE:
The City Grant Policy requires Council approval on all grant applications requiring a local match. This grant application requires a 20% match of the requested grant amount, $27,417.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Field Operations Department's Solid Waste Management Division applied for state grant funds on February 19, 2014 to the NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR). The Division of Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) administers the Community Water Reduction and Recycling Grant to assist local governments with expanding, improving and implementing waste reduction and recycling programs in North Carolina. Due to the timing of the grant application and other staff commitments, April 1st is the first opportunity for City Council to review this as an agenda item. In accordance with the Grant Policy, the City Council was provided information on the grant application approval request in the March 21, 2014 IFYI Report.
The proposed project will strengthen the city's Recycling Program and serve as a catalyst for future away-from-home recycling projects. The goal is to continue diverting bottles and cans from convenience stores' waste streams, strengthen the Recycling Program and help grow Greensboro into a culture of recyclers. If approved and awarded, the grant funds will be used to establish the Convenience Store Recycling initiative to promote and implement recycling receptacles at convenience store gas pumps.
BUDGET IMPACT:
