PURPOSE:
The Parks and Recreation Department seeks to apply for a $50,000 KOMPAN “Let’s Play for 50K!” grant for the Henry Street Neighborhood Park. The grant requires a dollar-for-dollar match of $50,000, which is included in the Henry Street Neighborhood Park development’s existing project budget of $374,030. City Council approval is required for this matching grant, which has an application deadline of May 31, 2018. If the grant is awarded, the funding would be applied to the Henry Street Neighborhood Park existing project, as recommended by neighborhood input.
BACKGROUND:
On July 15, 2014, City Council authorized the sale of 7.004 acres of the Henry Street Neighborhood Park to KRC Greensboro Limited Partnership for the expansion of Abbotswood Senior Living Facility. The remaining three acres of parkland were to be redeveloped and proceeds from the sale were to be used solely for funding the park’s improvement. In early 2017, a series of community conversations were held to get specific community input on design components and amenities at the park. Stewart Engineering, Inc. is currently finalizing the design plan based upon the community input received, which includes new fitness and playground equipment, upgrades to the existing shelter, and other site improvements for ADA accessibility. The “Let’s Play for 50K!” grant will also provide additional funding for the Henry Street Neighborhood Park for Kompan equipment already identified for the site improvements.
BUDGET IMPACT: Parks and Recreation has funding available from the July 15, 2014 sale of property to KRC Greensboro Limited Partnership. If awarded the grant, the local match of $50,000 will be added to the existing funding in account number 410-5017-02 for a total budget of $342,073.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED: The Parks and Recreation Department requests City Council approval and adoption of a resolution authorizing the KOMAPN “Let’s Play for 50K!” matching grant in the amount of $50,000.
