PURPOSE:
City Council is requested to approve the contract award to Samet Corporation for Battleground Parks District Phase I - Hillside Development.

BACKGROUND:
In 2016, voters approved funding for the development of the Battleground Parks District (BPD), a re-imagination of over 400 acres in the heart of Greensboro that contains Country and Jaycee Parks, the Greensboro Science Center, Forest Lawn Cemetery, the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Spencer Love Tennis Facility, Lewis Community Recreation Center, and a portion of the A&Y Greenway. Since 2017, the City and a number of stakeholders, including the Greensboro Science Center, have been working collaboratively to update the BPD master plan. The first phase of the master plan implementation, the hillside development, will include the City's first elevated tree canopy walk, a zipline, picnic shelter, restroom facility, promenade and event area, an accessible walkway connector between Country Park and the Rotary Carousel, a new parking area off Lawndale Drive, and relocation of the dog park.

Maximizing public funds and investment by leveraging private dollars is key to the BPD model. As such, the zipline feature of project received private support through a $100,000 donation received by the Greensboro Science Center. At the March 16, 2021 City Council meeting, a budget ordinance to allocate this funding was approved and will be reimbursed as part of the Phase I construction.
