PURPOSE:
NCDOT administers the routing of all NC, US and Interstate routes throughout the state. From time to time, these routes are adjusted based on roadway improvements, changes in national criteria and local requests. These changes trigger changes in corresponding municipal ordinances related to routes and speed limits.
NCDOT has requested a number of changes to municipal speed limit ordinances along several state maintained streets in Greensboro to reflect changes to the municipal boundary and NCDOT's change in the routing of US 70 through Greensboro. These changes will not change the posted speed limits.
BACKGROUND:
The attached ordinances amend Section 16-96 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances by changing Schedule 2A - Speed Limits on State Highway System Streets as detailed below.
- US 70 Relocation - The requested ordinance changes reflect the rerouting of US 70 through Greensboro. This change is supported by the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and involves a segment of US 29/US 70/US 220 in Greensboro to US 29/US 70 in Davidson County. The revised route runs concurrently with Wendover Avenue from US 29 west to the Greensboro municipal limit. This change provides a numbered diversion route for interstate traffic, aids in incident management, provides better route continuity, and simplifies freeway signing.
