PURPOSE:

The Parks & Recreation Department applied for a $10,515 match grant to support upgrades at the Smith Active Adult Center facility and advertising of the Center.  The grant requires a $3,505 local match, for a total grant project budget of $14,020.  The current City grants policy requires Council approval for grants requiring match funds.

BACKGROUND:

The Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging has offered an annual grant opportunity that the Department plans to use to support improvements to the Parks and Recreation Department’s Smith Active Adult Center facility.  The funds will be used for purchasing a piece of fitness equipment, installing two new water fountains, purchasing new activity tables, and purchasing advertisements in Four Seasons Mall and the News & Record.

The project provides health and wellness opportunities to City residents ages 50 and up and supports the Departments goals, strategies and objectives: to seek and partner with outside organizations to maximize human and financial resources and maintain viability through partnerships, grants, and volunteer efforts.

BUDGET IMPACT:

Funds are available in the current Senior Programs Maintenance and Operations budget.  If the grant is approved and awarded, City funds will leverage $3.00 in grant funds for every City dollar invested in the project.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

City Council approval is requested to authorize a matching grant application for 2020-21 Senior Center General Purpose Grant.
