PURPOSE:
A public hearing has been advertised for October 20, 2020 for City Council to receive public comments on an application for the 2020 Justice Assistance Grant.
BACKGROUND:
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program awards are direct to local jurisdictions. The allocation is from a formula-based, non-competitive federal criminal justice funds which does not require a match. A wide range of activities that support justice based programs are eligible for funding. The grant award is calculated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, based upon a specific formula and involves the state's share of the national population and the state's share of the country's Part 1 violent crime statistics.
The 2020 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds of $241,872 will be administered by the Greensboro Police Department. The funding will be divided between the Greensboro Police Department, Guilford County Sheriff's Department, and the High Point Police Department. This public hearing is a requirement of the administration of the JAG Grant pursuant to applicable Federal law. The total allocation is $241,872 and the amounts for each jurisdiction are:
* Guilford County: $ 59,544.80
* City of Greensboro: $133,029.60
* City of High Point: $ 49,297.60
The funding will be used by the Greensboro Police Department for items including racial equity training for officers, protective bomb suits for Greensboro's Hazardous Device team, and a fingerprinting machine to assist citizens with printing for job applications and background checks.
