PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Fire Department has received a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant award of $145,800. This grant allows the fire department to purchase equipment to be used for the protection of the 450 acre tank farm.

BACKGROUND:
The City of Greensboro is home to a 450-acre tank farm that consists of 176 above ground fuel tanks. Pipelines deliver refined product to 11 oil companies with storage and processing facilities in the tank farm. No crude oil is stored on site, thus, the routine hazard is of the most volatile products. The combined storage capacity of all the facilities is 500,650,390 gallons. This product is moved from the storage and processing tanks, through large truck rack loading systems, into tankers for delivery to outlets in NC, VA, and TN.

The Greensboro Fire Department protects the tank farm by utilizing equipment that will specifically allow the fire department to deploy portable pumps with the requested large diameter hose to any area of the 450-acre tank farm and, in conjunction with the municipal water supply, establish a flow rate of over 8000 GPM. This grant will allow the replacement of aging equipment to specifically protect the tank farm and above ground storage tanks.

BUDGET IMPACT:
This is a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant for $132,545 that will cover the cost of equipment specifically used for fire suppression at the tank farm. This FEMA grant is a 10% match grant which means $13,2...
