PURPOSE:

The City Council for the City of Greensboro called upon the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) to revisit their Consent Search policy. The Greensboro Criminal Justice Advisory Commission (GCJAC) was also requested to survey the current GPD policy related to Consent Search. GCJAC returned recommendations to amend the current GPD policy. 

 

BACKGROUND:

The City Council for the City of Greensboro engaged in meaningful discussions with GPD concerning principals to create constructive police policy changes in an effort to reduce the number of violent encounters with citizens; and as a result of these discussions the City evaluated the current policies of the GPD concerning Consent Searches.

City Council is requested to consider amendments to GPD Departmental Directive 12.5.1 Consent Searches.
