PURPOSE:
The City of Greensboro participates in the review of nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, the nation’s official list of properties, districts and sites worthy of preservation.
BACKGROUND:
The City received a notice of opportunity to comment on the nomination of the Blue Bell Company Plant to the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Preservation Commission considered the nomination at a public hearing and voted in support. The North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee will consider the nomination on October 8, 2020.
Constructed in stages between 1921 and 1927 the Blue Bell Company Plant was a state-of-the-art, open-plan, concrete reinforced, fire-resistant factory and exemplifies the industrial development of Greensboro during the 1920s. Blue Bell was one of the largest manufacturers of overalls in the nation and one of Greensboro’s most important employers.
Listing in the National Register is primarily an honor and places no restrictions on the property owner using private resources. Listing makes the owner eligible for federal and state historic rehabilitation income tax credits.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There will be no impact on the budget as a result of National Register listing.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
The Planning Department recommends adoption of the resolution in support of National Register listing for the Blue Bell Company Plant.
