PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has received a mini-grant from the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association (NCRPA) on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), in the amount of $1,500 to further support DEI work in communities. To accept this grant, a budget ordinance is requested from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has entered into an agreement with the NCRPA on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to further provide and enhance services for communities within the City of Greensboro. NCRPA is a nonprofit education and advocacy organization, dedicated to the advancement of the park, recreation and leisure professionals in the state. The agency empowers parks and recreation professionals and citizen board members through educational opportunities that enhance their ability to change lives and impact communities. Members from Greensboro Parks and Recreation participated in the NCRPA Racial Equity Cohort where participants had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of racial equity issues in their community. Only alumni from the cohort were encouraged to apply for funding. Greensboro Parks and Recreation was one of four departments to be awarded $1,500 grant.
The funds provided will encourage communities to participate in a Piedmont Discovery (PD) scavenger hunt. Funds from the DEI grant will include a targeted marketing approach using multiple media outlets as well as yard signs in parks and throughout the communities. Since the Piedmont Discovery App is mobile phone based, selfie spots will be used to collect and identify participant data. Funding will also supply quality prizes to be awarded to the first to discover the clue with all others being included in a drawing for a second prize.
BUDGET IMPACT:
A grant account number has 220-5098-01 has been set up for the requested action and will have no impact on the City of Greensboro’s budget.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance establishing funding in the amount of $1,500 for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Grant.
