PURPOSE:

The Greensboro Police Department has been awarded a Railroad Trespassing Enforcement Grant from United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration in the amount of $40,000. A budget ordinance is needed to accept the award.

BACKGROUND:

United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded several law enforcement agencies funding to support life-saving trespass abatement in multiple states under their Railroad Trespassing Enforcement Grants. The funding will help local law enforcement agencies to deter people from taking unnecessary risks around railroad tracks. In total, the FRA awarded eleven projects in six states.

The Police Department wishes to use the funding for overtime for officers to support railway safety education, as well as railway patrol and enforcement activities.

BUDGET IMPACT:

The grant does not require additional City funds and the grant funds will be housed in account 220-3503-01.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is requested that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance establishing funding in the amount of $40,000 so that the funds may be expended.
