PURPOSE:

The purpose of this ordinance is to receive grant funds from Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at UNCSA in the amount of $15,000 for wages to support an Arts and Cultural Affairs Creative Catalyst Fellowship artist in residence.

BACKGROUND:

The Kenan Institute at UNCSA is expanding its impact through Creative Catalyst, a groundbreaking five-year plan to identify and prepare the next generation of artist leaders and position UNCSA as an innovative hub for the creative economy in North Carolina and the Southeast. Creative Catalyst provides current and future leaders with an online education in Artist Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well opportunities to actively engage with the creative sector through the annual Artivate summit and fellowship opportunities.

As an integral part of this new initiative, Creative Catalyst Fellowships are designed to support the City of Greensboro, as a Partner in Creative Catalyst, to develop and empower artist leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators to lead, create and make, while engaging the arts and creative sector.

The Arts and Cultural Affairs division, Creative Greensboro, will provide a resident experience for the Fellow, and a platform to launch their ideas about the contributions that arts and artists can make. Over a six-month residency, the Fellow will put into practice the concepts and skills learned in the online certificate. Fellows will expand their knowledge about leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship by taking the Creative Catalyst Certificate, an online educational program. At the Artivate summit, Fellows will share with their peers the programs they implemented while in their Fellowship residency. At all stages in their experience with Creative Catalyst, Fellows will inspire other artist leaders to follow the same path.

The Arts and Cultural Affairs Division, or Creative Greensboro, will be awarded a grant in the amount of $15,000 for wages for an Arts and Cultural Affairs Creative Catalyst Fellow over a six (6) month residency program.

The City will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kenan Institute at UNCSA for the Creative Catalyst Fellowship.

BUDGET IMPACT:

The grant, in the amount of $15,000, represents wages for up to 20 hours per week over a six month period of time for a Creative Catalyst Fellowship supported by the Kenan Institute. The City of Greensboro will be responsible for the cost of applicable expenses and payroll taxes, such as FICA in an approximate amount of $1,200, and maintenance and operating expenses of approximately $500 associated with this position expensed to the Arts and Cultural Affairs division in the General Fund.

A budget ordinance must be approved by City Council to accept the receipt and expenditure of funds.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is requested and recommended that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance for the State, Federal, and Other Grants Fund in the amount of $15,000 in support of the City’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Creative Catalyst Fellowship.
