PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Police Department will serve as the lead/fiscal agent to the Governor's Crime Commission (GCC) Crime Victims' Services Committee for a one year federal grant award totaling $119,966.70 for the Greensboro Child Response Initiative (CRI) Program. The award for FY 20 is $89,973.08 and requires a 20% match of $29,993.62, making the total grant award $119,966.70. The GPD will provide the match with in-kind contributions and NC Drug Excise Tax funds. To apply for this grant, City policy requires approval by City Council.
BACKGROUND:
Competitive funds for North Carolina law enforcement and related non-profit agencies are available from the GCC on an annual basis. The GCC designates specific committees to determine the most effective methods of equitably distributing these funds across the State. The mission of the Crime Victims' Services Committee is to advocate for victims by promoting the development of effective programs that improve the response of human service professionals and the criminal justice system to crime victims.
The CRI provides a coordinated community response to children (0-18 years of age) and their families who have experienced any type of trauma or violence, with the goals of (1) reducing the likelihood of child witnesses and victims becoming later violent offenders; and (2) decreasing mental health symptoms and other negative outcomes. The program has been active since 2008. The majority of CRI referrals are received from GPD patrol officers.
