PURPOSE:
Per the Parks and Recreation Department Facilities Naming Policy, City Council approval is required for the naming and official designation of parks and recreation facilities. An application and petition has been submitted requesting to change the name of Greenway Park to Sunset Hills Park.
BACKGROUND:
In July 2018, the Sunset Hills Neighborhood Association submitted an application and petition to the Parks and Recreation Commission requesting to change the name of Greenway Park to Sunset Hills Park. The purpose of the request is to ensure that the name of the park is consistent with the name of the neighborhood in which it is located, Sunset Hills, and to eliminate confusion between the park and an actual 'greenway.'
The Parks and Recreation Department's Facilities Naming Policy requires at least three (3) public readings of the proposed name as an agenda item at monthly Commission meetings within a ninety (90) day period, barring opposition to the proposed naming.
At the Commission's August 8, 2018 meeting, the proposed name change request was presented and accepted by the Commission. At the September 12, 2018 meeting, the Commission entertained speakers from the floor to receive public input. One citizen spoke in favor of the name change; there were no speakers against the request. Due to lack of quorum at its October meeting that prevented action on the request, the Commission kept the public comment period open an additional month. At the November 14, 2018 meeting, the Commission unanimously recommended to approve the name change to 'Sunset Hills Park' and to forward the matter to City Council for consideration.
