Title

Ordinance Amending Section 21-8 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances with Respect to Personnel

Department: Legal

Meeting Date:

Public Hearing: No

Advertising Date/By: N/A

Contact and Phone: Marikay Abuzuaiter, Councilmember, 373-2301

PURPOSE:

To amend Sec. 21-8 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances to enable city officers, agents or employees to become a candidate for nomination, election, or appointment to political office in areas other than the City of Greensboro or Guilford County.

BACKGROUND:

Given the recent conversations surrounding the political activity of employees, Councilmember Abuzuaiter requests an amendment to Ordinance Sec. 21-8 so that employees may be permitted to run for elected office in areas outside the City of Greensboro or outside Guilford County. An amendment of this sort recognizes the benefits of having citizens fulfill their civic duty as members of neighboring communities while balancing the concern that employees of the City of Greensboro are civil servants who are meant to be impartial as they serve the public in their daily duties.

Specifically, the amendment would permit officers, agents, or employees of the City to become a candidate for nomination, election, or appointment to political office in areas other than the City of Greensboro or Guilford County.

BUDGET IMPACT:

None.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is recommended that City Council consider amending Sec. 21-8 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances to enable city officers, agents or employees to become a candidate for nomination, election, or appointment to political office in areas other than the City of Greensboro or Guilford County.
