PURPOSE:
The Water Resources Department requests a resolution to recognize the Imagine a Day Without Water campaign in the City of Greensboro beginning October 10, 2018.

BACKGROUND:
On October 10, 2018, water and sewer providers, organizations, elected officials, corporations, environmental advocates, and others across the country are joining together to raise awareness about the importance of reliable water infrastructure and clean water.

Water is essential for everything we do in life. While nature provides water, it takes pipes, pumps, other equipment, and people working 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to deliver clean water to homes and businesses. It takes additional infrastructure and manpower to remove and treat wastewater so it can be safely reused or returned to our environment. Water infrastructure is largely invisible to the community-which normally means out of sight, out of mind for most people.

Much of the City's and the nation's infrastructure is nearly 100 years old; which makes our infrastructure susceptible to a high risk of failure. In an effort to address this risk, the City of Greensboro has implemented prudent financial strategies to rehabilitate and replace aging water infrastructure all while maintaining reasonable rates that rank second lowest in the state among the largest utilities.

The City of Greensboro is dedicated to ensuring clean, safe water for the community. On October 10, 2018, residents are asked to imagine a day without water, recognize the value of the City's water and sewer service, and continue to support improvements as needed to ensure continued reliable water, stormwater, and wastewater services.
