PURPOSE:

To amend Sec. 12-22 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances to reduce the membership of the Human Relations Commission from 15 members to 9 members.

BACKGROUND:

Under NCGS 160A-492 and City Code Sec. 12-21 et seq., the Greensboro City Council is enabled to establish a Human Relations Commission. The purpose of the Commission is to perform activities that encourage fair treatment and promote mutual understanding and respect among residents.  Code Sec. 12-22 requires the Commission be composed of 15 members.

At the August 21, 2018 City Council meeting, City Council approved a motion to reduce the membership of the commission from 15 members to 9 members.  This action requires an amendment to the Code of Ordinance Sec. 12-22.  The reduction will be achieved through attrition.

The City Council’s oversight of the Commission will continue in accordance with Council’s March 14, 2016 Resolution concerning the re-organization and appointment procedures for the City’s boards and commissions.

BUDGET IMPACT:

None.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is recommended that City Council amend Sec. 12-22 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances to reduce the membership of the Human Relations Commission from 15 members to 9 members.
