PURPOSE:
The Parks and Recreation Department has the opportunity to apply for a $10,693 match grant to support upgrades at the Smith Senior Center facility and advertising at the Center. The grant requires a $3,564 local match, for a total grant project budget of $14,257. The current City grants policy requires Council approval for grants requiring match funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging has offered an annual grant opportunity that the Department plans to use to support improvements to the Parks and Recreation Department’s Smith Senior Center facility. The funds will be used for restoring the center’s terrazzo floors, purchasing a piece of fitness equipment, purchasing a barcode scanner for the new pickleball complex at the center, and purchasing an advertisement in the News & Record.
The project provides health and wellness opportunities to City residents ages 55 and up and supports the Department’s goal of seeking and partnering with outside organizations to maximize human and financial resources and maintaining viability through partnerships, grants, and volunteer efforts.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Funds are available in the current Senior Programs Maintenance and Operations budget. If the grant is approved and awarded, City funds will leverage $3.00 in grant funds for every City dollar invested in the project.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
City Council approval is requested to authorize a matching grant application for 2018-19 Senior Center General Purpose Grant.
