PURPOSE:

The Greensboro Department of Transportation and Greensboro Transit Authority wish to install solar panels and make other infrastructure improvements at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot associated with electric buses.  A budget ordinance is required to appropriate those funds.

BACKGROUND:

The Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) has a goal to move toward a fleet of all-electric buses.  An order has been placed for 10 buses and GTA expects to take delivery of the first of these buses in November 2018.  As part of this transition, certain infrastructure improvements will be made to the Depot.  These include the installation of a Fast Charger funded through a grant by Duke Energy, solar panels to offset electricity charges associated with the Fast Charger, and a generator to ensure that operations can continue in the event the Depot loses power.

BUDGET IMPACT:

Funding in the amount of $222,969 is available to offset expenses associated with the upgrades to the Depot.  These are the proceeds received from the sale of the old GTA facility (320 East Friendly Avenue) to Greensboro Parks and Recreation.  The funds will be budgeted in GTA Grant Fund account 567-4524-01.6059.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

Transportation staff recommends and requests adoption of the attached budget ordinance establishing funding in the amount of $222,969 for improvements at the Depot associated with the operation of electric buses.
