PURPOSE:

The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has received a “Meet Me at the Park” Play Spaces grant from the National Recreation and Park Association in coordination with the Walt Disney Company, in the amount of $30,000 to support the Brightwood Neighborhood Park. To accept the grant and add the appropriate matching funds to the account, a budget amendment is requested from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.

BACKGROUND:

The National Recreation and Park Association, in collaboration with the Walt Disney Company, expanded the Meet Me at the Park program by awarding grants to local communities that provide new opportunities for inclusive play and physical activity for kids and families.

The grant was one of 25 distributed to communities nationwide as part of the “Meet Me at the Park” campaign, where park and recreation agencies were invited to share their best ideas on increasing access to inclusive play spaces for children and families in underserved communities. Agencies with the most innovative, scalable and impactful project ideas received grants to build their projects.

Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department will create an adventure trail with interactive activities at Brightwood Neighborhood Park. The City will also use the funding to partially fund an outdoor exploration and learning environment at Brightwood Park. The project, designed with input from area residents, will include a nature play area with amenities such as tree balance beams, loose play pieces for fort building, and STEM-inspired plant identification (science, technology, engineering and math). The project will be completed by the end of 2018.

BUDGET IMPACT:

Matching funding is available in account number 482-5001-10 with associated budget adjustment. The grant award of $30,000 requires a $30,000 match and the ordinance will allow funds to be appropriated with account number 220-5091-01. City Council approved the submission of the matching grant application at its February 20, 2018 meeting under resolution 18-0088.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance transferring funds to allow for acceptance of the grant and the matching funds of $30,000 to be utilized for the grant award from the National Recreation and Park Association for the Meet Me at the Park Play Spaces grant.
