PURPOSE:
To change the name of Dans Road to Barber Park Drive

BACKGROUND:
Dans Road is currently a private, park road located within Barber Park, which is owned by the City of Greensboro and managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. As part of the Phase II development of Barber Park and the construction of the new Barber Park Community Building and Ruth Wicker Tribute to Women, the existing Dans Road was extended to create a new connection to Florida Street, and as a result, was named "Dans Road Extension." This extension creates a new entrance into the park and improves the visibility and access to the new community building, Penn Wright Bronco Stadium, and Simkins Sports Pavilion.

At a December 2017 Community Planning Assistance Public Meeting, a request to rename Dans Road to English Street was received by the Department. After evaluating the request and considering that Dans Road is a private park road and not a public road, staff recommended that it be renamed Barber Park Drive. The road will continue to serve the park and will not be accessible by the public or vehicular traffic outside of park operating hours. In addition, the road is a private drive and therefore, there is no requirement for a public hearing. The request was presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission at their August 8, 2018 meeting and was approved.

If the street name change is approved by City Council, the Parks and Recreation Department will notify utility companies and various other service agencies of this change to minimize any inconvenience to residents.

BUDGET IMPACT:
It is estimated that the cost to prepare and install new street signs will be $975.00 and a new entrance sign for Barber ...
