PURPOSE:

Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures. The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has received a grant from the Weaver Foundation in the amount of $10,000 to provide a consultant to assist the Community Food Task Force Leadership Team in developing a two-year work plan. To accept this grant, a budget amendment is requested from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.

BACKGROUND:

Acceptance of this grant allows Parks and Recreation and members of the Community Food Task Force the opportunity to network and share relevant organizational information and resources and recruit volunteers. The Community Food Task Force has worked on a variety of projects over the last several years with one of the main projects being to increase the number of free meals provided to families in need. The many partners involved continue to work together to make sure that children are fed during the school year, both before and after-school, and during the summer. The summer meals program has grown tremendously because of a unified effort and a coordinated marketing effort to support the great partners working on this effort.

Most recently, the Task Force has developed a Leadership Team that will guide the Task Force in creating their upcoming programmatic activities that will focus on the following: Access/Transportation/Food Distribution, Health/Education, Awareness/Communication/Advocacy, and Production/Agricultural Extension/Community Gardens.  The development of the Leadership Team and these core focus areas will help to strengthen the work of the Task Force and allow for a clear direction moving forward. The current Leadership Team is made up of members from City Planning, Summit Rotary, Out of the Garden Project, Second Harvest Food Bank, Cone Health, United Way of Greater Greensboro, Rock and Wrap it Up, Greensboro Parks and Recreation, Greensboro Transit Authority, A Simple Gesture, NC A&T, Guilford Cooperative Extension and New Hope Development Group.

The grant from the Weaver Foundation will fund an Organizational and Development Consultant that will work with the staff liaison and Leadership Team closely to guide discussions on strategic action steps to provide access to food and a healthier communities.

BUDGET IMPACT:

Acceptance of the grant will not require a match. The grant award of $10,000 is associated with account number 220-5090-01.7170.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is recommended that the City Council accept the Weaver Foundation Grant and adopt the attached budget ordinance to establish funding in the amount of $10,000 for bringing in a consultant to work with the Community Food Task Force and Leadership Team.
