PURPOSE:

City Council is requested to consider a resolution declaring the month of June 2018 as ‘Homeownership Month’ to coincide with the National Homeownership Month designation.

BACKGROUND:

The month of June is National Homeownership Month, and promoted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, whereby communities are encouraged to increase public awareness of the many benefits of homeownership.

Homeownership plays a critical role in strengthening families and communities.  The City of Greensboro utilizes federal Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership programs, as well as state and local funding programs to increase and preserve decent, safe and affordable homeownership options for low and moderate income households.  These funds additionally leverage other public and private sources for development through non-profit and for profit development partners, mortgage and construction loans, realtors, housing counselors and other homeownership service providers.

A homeownership fair has been scheduled for June 26 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Union Square Campus, located at 124 E. Gate City Blvd.  Education sessions, information and vendors will be available to potential homebuyers.

BUDGET IMPACT:

No funding impact.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

The City Council is requested to consider a resolution declaring the month of June 2018 as ‘Homeownership Month’ and encouraging residents to participate in the events planned for the month.
