PURPOSE:
This resolution is to allow the Greensboro Police Department and Guilford County to co-sponsor a study on the applicability of the Cure Initiative in the Greensboro/Guilford County area at an approximate cost of $7,000.

BACKGROUND:
Cure Violence, founded by University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health Epidemiologist Gary Slutkin, M.D. is a public health anti-violence program. It aims to stop the spread of violence in communities by using the methods and strategies associated with disease control - detecting and interrupting conflicts, identifying and treating the highest risk individuals, and changing social norms. In simpler terms, the initiative looks at violence as an infection that spreads from one person to another in clusters and epidemic waves. In doing so, the health sector will have a broader response to the violence epidemic.

Cure Violence Health model, formerly Chicago Cease Fire, uses a public health approach to prevent violence. Cure Violence includes efforts to detect and intervene in potentially violent situations, educate and mobilize communities against violence, and connect high-risk individuals to social services. Outreach workers develop relationships with high-risk individuals and promote community norms to reject the use of violence. Violence interrupters, in some cases former gang members, identify and directly mediate potentially dangerous conflicts. Cure Violence health model works with law enforcement to select intervention areas, refer high-risk individuals to social services, and organize community events.
