PURPOSE:
Volkert, Inc. is needed to provide additional construction engineering and inspection services for the Battleground Ave., Benjamin Pkwy., and Cone Blvd. Intersection Improvements Project. City Council approval of a contract extension to the professional services contract in the amount of $100,154.15 is requested.

BACKGROUND:
This intersection improvements project includes widening with turn lanes, sidewalks, resurfacing, and related work for Battleground Ave. between Martinsville Rd. and Oak Hill Dr., Cone Blvd. between Battleground Ave. and the Rail Trail tunnel area, and for Benjamin Pkwy. between Battleground Ave. and Holden Rd. to provide for improved flow of vehicles and pedestrians at and in the vicinity of this major, very busy intersection.

Volkert, Inc. was awarded the construction engineering and inspections contract for the project by the City Council on October 31, 2014, in the amount of $218,507.40. One extension to the contract was authorized on 8/3/17 in the amount of $3,576.38.

The Construction Inspections Department has identified the need to add several items to the inspections contract: the extension of the construction period by approximately 4 months; additional asphalt milling and overlay required by NCDOT; and additional overtime dictated by the requirements of the project. The cost to incorporate the additional construction engineering and inspection services is $100,154.15. With this contract extension, the new total amount of the contract will be $322,327.93.
