PURPOSE:
Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department two grants totaling $3,000 for the Explorer Program. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Explorer Program is a worksite-based program in which young adults learn about particular careers in which they have an interest. The Greensboro Police Department is launching an Explorer Program to teach young adults about the law enforcement profession and perhaps interest them in law enforcement as a future career path. Explorer Program activities include camps, defensive tactics instruction, forensics activities, leadership training, “ride alongs” with officers, and drill competitions.
The grant funds will be utilized for motivation speakers, National Conference Admissions, competition equipment and uniforms, equipment and equipment upgrades.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There is no impact on the police budget. The Wal-Mart Foundation via the Local Giving Program has awarded a grant to GPD’s Explorer Program FY18 of $3,000. The funds will be housed in account #220-3576-01.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
It is requested that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance for a Wal-Mart Foundation Local Giving Program Grant in the amount of $3,000 for the GPD’s Explorer Program FY 18.
