PURPOSE:
Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department a grant of $500 for their Office of Community Engagement (OCE).A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Police Department has adopted Neighborhood Oriented Policing (NOP) as an agency-wide philosophy. The objective is to align geography, officers and workload to better serve the public to solve problems and improve quality of life. The Office of Community Engagement supports the philosophy of NOP in which law enforcement and community partner together to solve problems. The office also enhances communication between the department and city residents by managing community outreach efforts.
These funds will benefit The Office of Community Engagement’s programs and services. Programs and services include police/community dialogue sessions, National Night Out, Operation PASS, and Operation Yuletide. Funds will be used for supplies, giveaways and promotional items for Community Engagement.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There is no effect on the department’s budget. The funds will be housed in account #220-3569-03.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
It is requested that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance for a Wal-Mart Foundation Local Giving Program Grant in the amount of $500 for the GPD’s Community Engagement efforts throughout the City of Greensboro for FY18.
