PURPOSE:

Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department a grant totaling $2,500 for the Police Neighborhood Resource Centers (PNRC).A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.

BACKGROUND:

In 1989, Police Neighborhood Resource Centers (PNRC) were established within the public housing communities of Greensboro and are jointly operated by the Greensboro Police Department and the Greensboro Housing Authority. The partnership’s focus is to implement and continue successful community oriented policing strategies within these neighborhoods.

The Wal-Mart Foundation via the Local Giving Program has awarded a grant to GPD’s Police Neighborhood Resource Centers FY18 of $2,500. The funds will be used to support community outreach efforts with youth, adults and senior residents in the communities. Activities will include special events, give away items, and general outreach to enhance police-community relationships.

BUDGET IMPACT:

There is no effect on the department’s budget. The funds will be housed in account #220-3574-01.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is requested that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance for a Wal-Mart Foundation Local Giving Program Grant in the amount of $2,500 for the GPD’s Police Neighborhood Resource Center FY 18.
