PURPOSE:
At the City Council meeting on January 9, 2018 City Council was requested to consider adoption of a resolution calling on Congress for immediate action to pass the Dream Act. City Council requested staff prepare the necessary documentation for the January 16, 2018 meeting of Council.
BACKGROUND:
A monthly Human Relations Commission meeting was held on January 4, 2018. The primary focus of the discussion, between community members and the commission, was a very urgent need for support from Greensboro City Council regarding the impending crisis for DACA (Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals) recipients.
The discussion was a follow up to an initial conversation that took place at the monthly meeting in September 2017, whereby a motion was passed to send a letter from the HRC against the rescission of DACA and reinstatement of the Dream Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) with no contingencies.
The HRC agreed with community members that any further delay in response would fail to impact the pending legislative vote at the Federal level on January 19, 2018 regarding undocumented residents.
The Human Relations Commission voted unanimously on January 4, 2018, to resubmit the letter to City Council requesting immediate action to include signing a Resolution to support the DREAM Act at the next City Council meeting on January 9, 2018.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There will be no budget impact.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
City Council is being requested to consider adoption of the resolution.
