PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Police Department is continuing its effort to take illegal guns out of the community. The department created a fund of $6,000 to aid in this initiative on February 21, 2017 (ord#17-13, ID 17-0091). These resources were dedicated toward two functions. First, the funds supported a new Crime Stopper program which encourages citizens to help law enforcement get illegal guns off the streets by calling in tips about firearms possessed by felons, stolen guns, firearms used in crimes, and guns deemed illegal under North Carolina law. Secondly, the funding allowed officers financial resources to find reliable sources of information. Because of the program's success, the department wishes to amend the grant to include an additional $8,000.

BACKGROUND:
The Greensboro Police Department seeks to give Crime Stoppers additional funding toward the joint effort. Namely, the project will continue to assist the department in its efforts to help stem the flow of gun-related violent crimes in the City. NCGS 105.113.111 allows local law enforcement agencies to share in the North Carolina Unauthorized Substances Tax proceeds. The NC Department of Revenue distributes a percentage of the excise tax proceeds to the local law enforcement agency whose investigation led to the assessment.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The Greensboro Police Department will use NC Department of Revenue Tax Distribution Drug Tax Funds for the Crime Stoppers grant and will not require any additional City funding. The funds will be housed in account #220-3550-02.
