PURPOSE:

The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has received a reimbursement grant from the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging, in the amount of $10,939 to support senior programming. To accept this reimbursement grant, a budget amendment is requested from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.

BACKGROUND:

The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has entered into an agreement with the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging to provide and enhance services for the senior residents within the City of Greensboro. The Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and coordinating aging services for seven counties in the Piedmont Triad (Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, and Rockingham) and each county’s residents age 60 and older.   The agency is organized to identify and support State area agencies who qualify for funding through the Federal Older American’s Act (OAA) and provides services to the elderly. The agency has agreed to reimburse the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department for expenses occurred with providing improved service for senior citizens up to a maximum of $10,939 for fiscal year 2017-18.

The funds provided will reimburse the City of Greensboro for replacing two pieces of exercise equipment in the fitness room, purchase tables and storage lockers, and fund advertisement of the center in Four Seasons Mall and News & Record.

BUDGET IMPACT:

This requested action will have no adverse impact on the City of Greensboro budget. Without the grant funds, the Greensboro budget would be responsible for all expenses that this grant supplements.  Grant funds awarded were anticipated during the budget process due to the Parks and Recreation Department being a recipient of funding from this agency for the past fifteen years. The total grant project is $14,585 which includes an award of $10,939 from the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging and a 25% match of $3,646 which the Parks and Recreation Department has available within Account #101-5046-01.5237.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance establishing funding in the amount of $14,585 for the reimbursement grant from the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging FY 17/18 Senior Center General Purpose Grant.
