PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Department of Transportation-Public Transportation Division received grant funding from the NCDOT-Public Transportation Division to serve as a sponsoring agency for the 2018 NCDOT-PTD Apprenticeship Program. A resolution needs to be approved to authorize the apprenticeship program and accept the funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Transportation Apprenticeship Program, administered through the N.C. Department of Transportation Public Transportation Division (NCDOT-PTD), offers work experience and learning opportunities to individuals who have earned a Bachelor’s degree and have the desire to work in the field of public transportation. The program provides exposure to all aspects of a transit system and allows apprentices to gain experience in public transportation operations. The Apprenticeship Program funds 90 percent of project costs. Sponsor transit systems are responsible for securing the local funds to provide the remaining 10 percent of project costs. NCDOT also provides a training allowance of $1,000, as reimbursable expenses. Selected candidates serve a 12 month apprenticeship at the sponsoring agency.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The City will be required to provide matching funds in the amount of $3,750. These funds are budgeted in the Transit Operations Account Number 564-4531-01.6567.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
The Department of Transportation recommends and requests that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing the FY2018 NCDOT-Public Transportation Division Apprenticeship Program.
