PURPOSE:

Consider a resolution renaming the Charles B. Aycock Historic District to the Dunleath Historic District.

BACKGROUND:

In March, the Charles B. Aycock Neighborhood Association voted to rename their neighborhood following the renaming of the Charles B. Aycock Middle School. The neighborhood selected the name Dunleath, which refers to the grand villa of North Carolina Judge Robert P. Dick that was constructed in 1856 on land that is now part of the neighborhood. The neighborhood association has requested the Local Historic District name be changed to reflect this change.

On May 24, the Historic Preservation Commission recommended approval of this change including amendments to the references in the Historic District Design Guidelines and the Land Development Ordinance. An excerpt of the meeting minutes is attached.

On June 21, the Planning Board conducted a public hearing to consider the required revisions to the Land Development Ordinance and reviewed the amended references in the Historic District Design Guidelines. The Planning Board recommended the amended references in the Historic District Guidelines.

If approved, changes to official maps, City websites, and other materials will be completed administratively.

BUDGET IMPACT:

None.
