PURPOSE:

This resolution affirms that July is Parks and Recreation Month and highlights the benefits that the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department provides to the community.

BACKGROUND:

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association has celebrated the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month. For 84 years, the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department has been serving the city through providing desirable and diverse parks, facilities, and programs. During this time, a team of professionals has developed trust and relationships with the community while being innovative and efficient toward exceeding community needs.

Through the support of the City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, community partners and dedicated professionals, Greensboro Parks and Recreation provides progressive leadership, and develops and maintains strong partnerships with public and private organizations to literally and figuratively change the landscape of Greensboro. The department is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation agencies and has been recognized nationally for best practice in terms of business operations and programming.

To celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, the department has planned many activities to showcase the depth and breadth of opportunities available, culminating in the second annual “P&R Fest” scheduled for Sunday, July 30 from 4-8 pm at Gillespie Golf Course. Later this year, Greensboro Parks and Recreation will be embarking upon a comprehensive system-wide master plan process designed to provide a roadmap for future success and growth and the department will host the Carolinas Joint Recreation and Park Association conference from September 11-13, 2017 at Koury Convention Center. Over a thousand park and recreation professionals from North Carolina and South Carolina are expected to visit Greensboro to learn about innovative trends in the field.
