PURPOSE:

The City of Greensboro Department of Transportation/Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) is pursuing the acquisition of electric buses as replacement vehicles for diesel buses that have met their useful life through FTA Section 5339 Low and No-Emission Vehicle grant funding. The Department requests that City Council pass a resolution to support application to these grant funds.

BACKGROUND:

The use of electric buses in GTA’s fleet can result in significant fuel and maintenance savings, reduce wear and tear on city roads, and support the City’s air quality improvement goals. The Greensboro Department of Transportation/Greensboro Transit Authority has identified the FTA Section 5339 Low and No-Emission Vehicle discretionary grant program as a potential source of funding and intends to submit an application for the acquisition of two (2) electric buses and associated charging infrastructure.

BUDGET IMPACT:

If the grant application is awarded, the City would be required to provide a 20% match to the grant funds. The City intends to apply for $2,700,000, which would result in a required match of $405,000.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

The Department of Transportation recommends and requests that the City Council approve the attached resolution supporting GTA’s acquisition of electric buses to replace diesel buses that have met their useful life and to pursue FTA Section 5339 discretionary grant funding for that purpose.
