PURPOSE:

The City of Greensboro was awarded a grant in the amount of $450,000 from Duke Energy for the purpose of installing electric bus charging infrastructure. A budget ordinance must be approved to allow the expenditure of funds.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Greensboro was awarded grant funding in the amount of $450,000 from Duke Energy on December 6, 2016 to apply towards costs associated with the installation of electric bus charging infrastructure. This infrastructure will be installed at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot and will service the electric buses the City plans to purchase with Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant funding in fiscal years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The fiscal year 2017 CMAQ grant will fund the purchase of the first two all-electric buses to be added to GTA’s fleet. These buses will replace diesel buses in the transit fleet that have met their useful life. The grant from Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC will be distributed through reimbursement of eligible costs associated with the purchase and installation of the charging infrastructure.

BUDGET IMPACT:

The City has been awarded funding in the amount of $450,000. No local matching funds are required. Funds will be budgeted in GTA Grant Fund account 567-4514-01.6059.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

The Department of Transportation recommends and requests that the City Council approve the attached budget ordinance establishing $450,000 for the Duke Energy Electric Bus Charging Infrastructure Grant.
