PURPOSE:
The City of Greensboro was awarded a grant in the amount of $450,000 from Duke Energy for the purpose of installing electric bus charging infrastructure. A resolution must be approved for execution of this agreement.

BACKGROUND:
The City of Greensboro was awarded grant funding, in the amount of $450,000, from Duke Energy on December 6, 2016 to apply towards costs associated with the installation of electric bus charging infrastructure This infrastructure will be installed at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot and will service the electric buses the City plans to purchase with Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant funding in fiscal years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The fiscal year 2017 CMAQ grant will fund the purchase of two all-electric buses, the first to be added to GTA's fleet. These buses will replace diesel buses in the transit fleet which have met their useful life. The grant from Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC will be distributed through reimbursement of eligible costs associated with the purchase and installation of the charging infrastructure.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The Duke Energy grant will provide $450,000 in assistance to fund the electric bus charging infrastructure which will support the city's new electric buses. Over the typical ten (10) to twelve (12) year useful life of a typical diesel bus, it is anticipated that the 100% electric bus will save up to $448,000 over this time period (life cycle cost) due to reduced maintenance and operating costs. Zero emissions and much reduced noise are added benefits of the 100% electric bus.
