PURPOSE:
The Field Operations Department requests City Council approval to add funding for the first one year contract extension for municipal solid waste disposal services with Republic Services, Inc. to cover remaining contract expenses in the amount of $650,000. The additional expense is due to an 11% increase (about 23,000 tons) in the municipal solid waste being disposed of at the City's transfer station from the previous contract year.

BACKGROUND:
On October 12, 2012, the City entered into a contract with Republic Services, Inc. to provide disposal services for municipal solid waste hauled from the City's Burnt Poplar Road transfer station to Republic's Uwharrie Environmental Landfill in Montgomery County, NC. The initial contract had a three year term with the option of two additional one-year extensions. At its October 20, 2015 meeting, City Council authorized the first of the one- year extensions of the contract with an estimated amount of $4,700,000 during the contract term. The costs have now exceeded the initial estimated contract extension amount due to an increase of nearly 23,000 tons from the previous contract year.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The requested funding ($650,000) to cover remaining contract expenses for the first contract extension is available in the Solid Waste Management Fund in account number 551-4306-07.5429.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
