PURPOSE:

City Council is requested to approve a contract with RP Murray Company to grade, install new curb/gutting and pave a new parking lot on the east side of the Greensboro Coliseum, occupying the former War Memorial Auditorium site that was demolished.  This contract also includes a new 6,000sf +/- Coliseum storage building that will be located on the Service Drive near the southeast corner of the Coliseum for equipment storage. The contractor will realign the existing Coliseum Service Drive for better access to the Coliseum and Special Events Center loading docks. The contract with RP Murray Company will be in the amount of $1,997,000.

 

BACKGROUND:

At the April 5, 2016 meeting, City Council approved a $20,000,000 bond package that will be supported by future hotel/motel tax revenues. These funds are to be used for Coliseum Complex roof replacements for both the main Coliseum arena and Special Events Center, along with other Coliseum improvements including parking lot improvements, the new Fieldhouse for the Greensboro Swarm, a fourth pool at the Greensboro Aquatic Center and expanding Wi-Fi coverage at the Complex.

 

The City received 4 bids on Tuesday August, 30, 2016. RP Murray Company submitted the lowest responsible base bid in the amount of $1,875,000. plus three add alternate bids that totaled $781,700 for a new storage building, new north end arena entrance/exit, and fencing. RP Murray and Coliseum staff value engineered the base bid for a new East side parking lot and add alt #1, storage building. The total contract will be in the amount of $1,997,000. The project duration is approximately 180 days.

 

The City of Greensboro’s M/WBE goal setting committed set original goals for the project at 9 % MBE and 11% WBE for subcontracting opportunities. RP Murray exceeded these goals on bid day with 13% MBE and 56% WBE.  After value engineering which include significant cuts, RP Murray will exceed these goals by 

utilizing 9.6 % MBE and 47% WBE.

BUDGET IMPACT:

This project is being funded from Hotel/Motel Tax revenues and thus does not have a negative impact to the Coliseum’s operating budget. Funds for this project are available in account 528-7501-03.6019 

 

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

Coliseum Complex Department is requesting that City Council approve this contract with RP Murray Company in the amount of $1,997,000.for building a new parking lot and storage building at the former War Memorial Auditorium site. The Contractor will begin work immediately for completion on or before April 1, 2017.
