PURPOSE: Consider resolution recognizing the Southeastern Building, recipient of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Great Places Award for Historic Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND:

The Southeastern Building in downtown Greensboro has been recognized with APA-NC’s 2016 Great Places award for a Great Historic Rehabilitation. The Great Places in North Carolina awards program was established in 2012 by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association to highlight North Carolina’s Great Places and the communities and people that create them.

As Greensboro’s first skyscraper, the Southeastern Building has been a signature part of our skyline for nearly 100 years. This award recognizes the important role historic restorations play in preserving the authentic flavor of Greensboro, and highlights the hard work of the many people involved in this restoration project, including the developers Barry Siegal and Willard Tucker who faithfully restored the Southeastern Building’s façade, re-establishing the original columns and neoclassical details. The upper floors have been renovated for fifty-one residential apartments and the rest of the building will soon be home to offices, retail shops, and restaurants.

The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the Downtown Greensboro Historic District, and City and County Landmark designation was awarded in 2010.

BUDGET IMPACT: None.
