PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Fire Department (GFD) has submitted a grant application for the purchase of an interactive live-fire training system for use in our community education program. The system will allow the Fire and Life Safety Division to educate residents on the components of a fire extinguisher, and its proper use. The grant requires a 5% match. Per the City Grants Policy, Council approval is required.

BACKGROUND:
The GFD is committed to the promotion of Public Safety and reduction of residential structure fires, fire deaths and dollar loss from fire. The department has long recognized the existence of a higher incidence of residential structure fires in the lower income areas of the City. Previous educational efforts in these communities have included smoke alarm campaigns, and specialized educational activities. If approved by Council and awarded by FEMA, this grant will enable the Fire Department to purchase equipment to further educate residents in lower income areas, as well as other residents throughout the city.

BUDGET IMPACT:
City match funds of $732.00 will leverage $14,653 in federal funds. The local funds are already designated for public education in the fire department's budget, and the federal funds will be provided in advance of the program expenditures.

DHS FEMA Funds $14,653.00
Local Match Funds $ 732.00
Total Project Funds $15,385.00

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
The Greensboro Fire Department requests City Council's consideration to approve the application for a $15,385.00 grant to purchase an interactive live-fire training system.
