PURPOSE:

The purpose of this agenda item is to allow City Council to officially recognize and thank the students in Ms. Lori Attias’ fourth grade class at Lindley Elementary School for the letters that Council received related to the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainability. Many students, along with their parents, will be present at the beginning of this meeting for the recognition.

BACKGROUND:

In November 2015, twenty three (23) fourth grade students wrote letters to City Council providing information about the detrimental effects that plastic shopping bags have on the environment. Many letters asked Council to consider banning the use of plastic shopping bags. Persuasive and impressive, the letters are currently being displayed at Lindley Community Recreation Center. The scope of the letters fit within the Parks and Recreation Department’s commitment to conservation.
