PURPOSE:
The Greensboro Police Department seeks approval of a Mutual Assistance Agreement between the City of Cleveland and the City of Greensboro to provide vitally needed temporary security and law enforcement services and equipment for the upcoming 2016 Republican National Convention to be held in Cleveland, Ohio the week of July 18, 2016. It is estimated that services and equipment provided will cost approximately $175,000. The City of Cleveland will reimburse the City of Greensboro for both personnel and equipment provided during the Convention.
BACKGROUND:
The Republican National Convention will be held in Cleveland during the week of July 18, 2016. This event is extremely important to the national political process, and due to the nature of the event the U.S. Secret Service designates it as a "National Security Special Event". The Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) in the Department of Public Safety requests assistance from the Greensboro Police Department, among other police departments throughout North Carolina, in meeting security and law enforcement needs during this period. The Cleveland Police Department is seeking a Justice Assistance Grant to cover security and law enforcement costs associated with the Convention.
The attached Mutual Assistance Agreement sets out the terms governing the assistance to be provided by the City of Greensboro and the legal authority to permit this contract.
