PURPOSE:
Dr. Spoma Jovanovic from the UNCG Department of Communications will provide an evaluation of Phase 1 of the Participatory Budgeting process.
BACKGROUND:
City Council supported a resolution on October 7, 2014 for Participatory Budgeting, a democratic process in which community members from all five City Council districts are directly deciding how to spend $500,000; $100,000 per district for the FY 16-17 budget. Outreach efforts for Participatory Budgeting began in September 2015 with the creation of a City Council appointed Steering Committee.
Participatory Budgeting is a four phase process in which: 1) Residents brainstorm ideas; 2) Delegates develop proposals vetted by City staff; 3) Residents vote on projects; 4) Winning projects are funded.
Dr. Spoma Jovanovic from the UNCG Department of Communications will provide an evaluation of the first project phase, Idea Collection.
