PURPOSE:
Through the Local Giving Program, Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and Logistics facilities support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) a grant of $1,000 for community engagement efforts within the City of Greensboro. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to accept these grant funds.
BACKGROUND:
The GPD has adopted Neighborhood Oriented Policing (NOP) as an agency-wide philosophy. The goal is to align geography, officers & workload to better serve the public to solve problems and improve quality of life.
Community engagement is instrumental to the philosophy of NOP in which law enforcement and community members work together to solve issues.
These funds will benefit department's Office of Community Engagement's programs and services. Programs and services include police/community dialogue sessions, National Night Out, Operation PASS, and Operation Yuletide.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The Wal-Mart Foundation via the Local Giving Program has awarded a $1,000 grant to the GPD's Community Engagement Office under the Fiscal Year 2015. Funds will be used for supplies, giveaways and promotional items for the department's Office of Community Engagement. The funds will be housed in account #220-3569-01.
