PURPOSE:
The intent of this match grant is to fund two projects - one that expands the location of recycle dumpsters and another that expands recycling education to students in Guilford County public schools located within the City of Greensboro. The Field Operations Department has applied to the North Carolina Division of Natural Resources (NC DENR) for a $14,083 grant requiring $2,816.67 in match funds. In accordance with the City Grants Policy, City Council approval is required for match grant applications.
BACKGROUND:
This grant covers two (2) proposed projects:
1) The City of Greensboro currently operates 20 unmanned drop sites for commingled recyclables, but has identified 3 city-owned properties (fire stations) that would be suitable for new drop site placement to fill gaps in coverage. The City would like to place two 8-yard dumpsters at each of these locations.
2) The City of Greensboro provides recycling and trash collection to Guilford County Schools located within the city. Currently, each of these schools have one (1) commingled recycling dumpster. It is the City’s goal to provide infrastructure and education to these schools, and to purchase recycling receptacles to be placed in the classroom in all participating schools. The receptacles will be provided free of charge provided that the schools agree to the written parameters.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Funding in the amount of $2,816.67 will leverage $14,083.00 in state funds to expand recycling initiatives in Guilford County public schools. The state funds are scheduled to be awarded at the end of the grant year. Project funds are available in the Department’s current budget.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
City Council approval of a resolution authorizing grant application for the a NC DENR 2016 Community Waste Recycling Match Grant for Recycling Drop Site Improvements and Public School Education Projects is requested.
