PURPOSE:
City Council Member Nancy Hoffmann has requested a resolution to recognize the Imagine a Day without Water Initiative in Greensboro on October 7th.
BACKGROUND:
Imagine a Day without Water is a national initiative with participants including water and sewer providers, organizations, and others to help raise awareness about water infrastructure. Water is essential for everything we do in life. While nature provides water, it takes pipes, pumps, equipment, and people working 24/7 to deliver clean water to homes and businesses, and then remove and treat wastewater so it can safely be reused or returned to the environment. Water infrastructure is largely invisible to the community and out of sight, out of mind for most people.
Much of the City’s and the Nation’s infrastructure is nearly 100 years old or more, which leads to a high risk of failure. Greensboro is on a proactive path to rehabilitate and replace its water infrastructure to address these risks, and its sound financial management strategies have allowed this to happen while maintaining reasonable rates that rank second lowest in the state among the largest utilities.
Greensboro is dedicated to ensure clean, safe water for residents. Residents are asked to imagine a day without water, recognize the value of their water and sewer service, and continue supporting improvements as needed to ensure continued reliable water and wastewater services.
RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
City Council is requested to recognize the Imagine a Day without Water Initiative on October 7th.
