PURPOSE:
NCGS 105.113.105 allows local law enforcement agencies to share in the North Carolina Unauthorized Substances Tax proceeds. The NC Department of Revenue distributes a percentage of the excise tax proceeds to the local law enforcement agencies which conducted the investigation of a dealer that led to the assessment. The Greensboro Police Department's has identified a portion of these funds to purchase new equipment and materials for the Traffic Safety Education Program. A budget ordinance needs to be approved by City Council in order to expend these funds.

BACKGROUND:
The State Drug Excise Tax funds will be utilized to purchase new equipment and materials to support the programming GPD currently provides and to sustain program initiatives of the Traffic Safety Education Program. Specifically funds will be utilized for wireless microphones, restoration costs for two equipment trailers and a golf cart.

The target audience of the GPD's Traffic Safety Education Program is Guilford County's 73,535 students, ages 5-18 across 126 schools in the area.

BUDGET IMPACT:
The Greensboro Police Department has identified State Drug Excise Tax funds for the purposes of enhancing the Traffic Safety Education Program initiatives. The funds will be housed in account #220-3566-01.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:
It is requested that the City Council adopt the budget ordinance for a $6,851 State Drug Excise Tax fund grant to provide new equipment and materials to enhance the quality of the GPD's Traffic Safety Education Program...
