PURPOSE:

The Greensboro Coliseum has been awarded a $20,000 Special Events, Tourism and Culturally-Related Activities (SETRAC) grant from the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau for the purchase of 12 volleyball net/stands for use while hosting the Youth AAU and Collegiate volleyball tournaments. To accept this grant, a budget ordinance is requested for approval from Greensboro City Council in accordance with current city fiscal procedures.

BACKGROUND:

Earlier this year, the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, with a recommendation to the City from the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, purchased 12 Sportcourts with 16 basketball goals and 6 Futsal goals at an investment of $315,000 to be used for hosting a variety of sporting events.  The Coliseum/City was unable to purchase the Volleyball nets/stands.   The purchase of these nets/stands will allow the Coliseum Complex to host regional and national volleyball tournaments as volleyball is one of several sports that can be played on the previously purchased Sportcourts (in addition to basketball and futsal).  Also, the combination of the sportcourts and volleyball net/stand will meet or exceed all NCAA, USA Volleyball, National Federation of State High School Associations and FIVB (International federation of volleyball governing body) requirements for competition.

BUDGET IMPACT:

This requested action will not have adverse impact on the City of Greensboro’s budget.  Without the grant funds, the Greensboro budget would be responsible for all expenses that this grant supplements.  The grant will save the city $20,000.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

It is requested and recommended that City Council adopt the attached budget ordinance establishing funding in the amount of $20,000 for the direct grant from the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau.
